The Captain of the Heavenly Hosts, Protector of the Faithful, and Guardian of Souls is painted as God’s warrior prince, resplendent and powerful. Commissioned for the Chapel of St. Michael at Holy Cross Monastery, Michael presides over the Monastery columbarium and shrine of the Founder. He holds a stylized shield with the image of Christ Emmanuel, often associated with Michael in the context of Our Lord’s Second Coming and the Last Judgment.
