Pauli Murray

IMG_3397.jpeg

Another of my icons of non-traditional saints, Murray was the first black woman ordained in the Episcopal Church. A gifted legal scholar and friend of Eleanor Roosevelt and Martin Luther King, Jr., she helped to lay the foundations for the civil rights victories of our time. Her work was always grounded in a strong faith, leading her eventually to ordination. This icon was commissioned to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the admission of women to the General Theological Seminary in New York.

Tempera and gold leaf on wood; 16”x21”; 2022. Chapel of the Good Shepherd, General Theological Seminary, New York.
