Benedict

Benedict (480-547) is considered the founder of Western monasticism. His “Rule” for religious communities has served for more than 1,500 years as the basic guide for Christian monastics. This icon, commissioned by a monastery in South Africa, shows Benedict with his feet on African ground while behind him glows the uncreated light of Heaven.
