This icon illustrates John 1:14, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” That text, in Greek, is entwined with the images—above, the Annunciation to Mary; below, the Transfiguration of Our Lord. In the second, the disciples are overcome as their eyes are opened and they see Jesus as he really is.
