This image depicts Christ enthroned in glory, surrounded by the heavenly beings and brilliant with the light of heaven. Based on a late 14th-century model, this monumental icon is rich in symbolism. Christ, seated on a throne and robed in gold, raises his hand in blessing. The text in the open book is from the Gospel of Matthew:  “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy-burdened, and I will give you rest.” Seraphim and cherubim swirl in adoration around the throne, while four winged creatures, symbolizing the Evangelists, carry the Gospel to the four corners of the world.
